Fill-the-Well
(idea adapted from Julia Kirk Cameron's The
Artist's Way and
Laura Hill, art director at Coronado School of the Arts)
|
Filling the well involves the active (or incidental)
pursuit of images to refresh our artistic reservoirs. The language of
art is in the image, the symbol. It is a sensual one, a language of
felt experience. When we work at our art, we dip into the well of our
experience and scoop out images. Because we do this, we need to learn
how to put images back.
In your own "Fill-the-Well" book, collect visual
images, experiences, writings (song lyrics, poetry, quotes), ideas,
doodles, and so on
cut images out of magazines, paint, collect
photographs, write profound or even less than mediocre thoughts over
postcards, newspaper clippings, club fliers, music advertisements.
Paste "found objects" in your "Well": leaves, random papers (worn
bags and papers can add texture, color, memories), candy wrappers,
packaging remnants, stamps, cloth, pieces of a letter from an old
friend. The possibilities are endless--your only limitation is your
imagination!
Attach this flier to the next blank page of your
"Well". Record the date on each page you fill.
