a sudden impulse, idea, etc.: brainstorming - a conference technique of solving specific problems, asmassing information, stimulating creative thinking, developing new ideas, etc., by unrestrained and spontaneous participation in discussion (Webster's. p 253).

brainchild, inspiration; good idea; impulse; instinct, urge; gut response [slang]; notion; sudden thought, flash, quick hunch; caprice, whim; crazy idea, fantastic notion (Chapman, 1977).

Brainstorming Synectics [this is a very cool tool] (Gordon, 1961) is an approach to creative thinking that depends on looking at, what appears on the surface as, unrelated phenomenon and drawing relavant connections. Its main tool is analogy or metaphor. The approach, which is often used by groups, can help students develop creative responses to problem solving, to retain new information, to assist in generating writing, and to explore social and disciplinary problems. It helps users break existing minds sets and internalize abstract concepts. Synectics can be used with all ages and works well with those who withdraw from traditional methods (Couch, 1993).
