Halloween Candy

Eager children
Change to expectant adolescents
And demanding teens
As All Hallows Eve progresses
From Dorothy and Simba
To Freddy and other denizens of hell
The night passes
And the sugar flows
Into the pillowcases
Of all ages
And ohmigod
Will my peers
Have a hangover tomorrow

The notes ring out
Sweet, clear notes
Fill my mind
Tranquilizing
My turbulent mind
Bringing
Peace
Serenity
Focus
Sharpening my
Rapidly blurring
View of life
Flying through
The tedious little hassles
Of my oh-so-stressed day
I set my spirit loose
To wander the pathways of
Nostalgia and Inspiration
That’s how I want to be
And that’s my idea of free

Silky
Smooth
Chocolaty
Sugary
Creamy
The milkshake
Slips over
My tongue
Sliding down
Stopping in
My stomach
And I am in

For when I have courage
The opportunity will have flown
And the chance will have passed
So I'll get out of my rut
Break my mold
I've been building for oh so long
Thinking, Carpe Diem
And why be normal

Walking through the hallways
Of this venerable recycling pile
Thinking of all the things we have to be
Strong, but not overpowering
Smart, but not brainy
Tough, but not a stone
Brave, but not fearless
Ambitious, but not gung-ho
Bad, but not evil
Bold, but not scary
Cool, but not icy
Calm, but not a Zen monk
But of all the things we have to be
One of them cannot be free
Free to go against the norm
Free to disagree with the popular ones
Free to do whatever
Free to be unconventional
Free to loose your spirit
Free to not be snobby
Free to be unusual
Free to be me
And most of all
Free to be free
