The following drawings have evolved out of an exercise I do with my students, drawing to music. It started when I was teaching art at Coronado High School. The chair of the visual art department, Laura Hill, a phenomenal teacher and person, used crayons with her students. I hadn't used crayons since childhood and thought, what a juvenile medium for high school students. Years later, I had a desire to break away from small detailed [uptight] pen and ink drawings. Toward that end I started using crayons with my students when we would draw to music. I discovered that the waxie crayons have wonderful properties that evoke a loose style with unexpected surprises. I hope you enjoy these a quarter as much as I enjoy creating them.

Boon Hotel

Drawn while sitting on the deck of our room at the Boon Hotel + Spa in Guerneville, California, just outside of Healdsburg, Calistoga, Sonoma, and Napa. A stones throw from the Russian River, the red woods, and some of the most beautiful country roads we've seen. This small hotel has a wonderful balance between simplicity and geniune hospitality.

99 dreams I have had.
In every one a red balloon.
It's all over and I'm standing pretty.
In this dust that was a city.
If I could find a souvenir.
Just to prove the world was here.
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.
