PowerPoint Tips

PowerPoint, an excellent presentation tool

  • Tells a story
  • Organizes your presentation
  • Keeps the audience involved - hopefully

Start your presentation with a quote that sets the tone.

"Consider the overall message of the presentation and formulate a practical strategy to execute it."

Liven up you presentation

  • Animate text blocks -
bring in text one key point at a time, but don't get carried away with too much animation. BE CAREFUL, unless you have rehearsed
  • Animate images -
use multiple images or animations to show more depth. Make sure that each image and or animation supports the slide. Don't just put something there because it's "cool".

A picture is worth...
Well, you can insert all kinds of images such as:

  • Photographs
  • Internet art
  • Clip Art
  • Charts and graphs
  • Video
  • Sound
  • You need to be careful of file size - keep under 400k if possible
  • Don't get carried away - make sure everything supports your content

Whoa, be careful...

  • Use simple sentences or phrases
  • Fit about seven or fewer lines on a slide...
    give or take...
    if you have more information,
    but it won't fit...
continue the topic onto the next slide.
  • Use colors and images that support your presentation.
  • Use type that can be easily read oops, easily read from a distance.
Try to keep body text no smaller than 24 points
    and titles at 36 points.
  • Use templates until you get the hang, or not.
  • Don't get carried away with lots of "cool stuff".

Finish your presentation with a quote that leaves the audience with something to think about.

"Remember -- speaking is an audience-centered sport. Avoid speaking out of ego, appearing too cocky or unprepared. As long as you stay focused on the audience -- in preparation, delivery and during the Q and A, you should be successful as a presenter." - Marjorie Brody - http://www.presentation-pointers.com/showarticle/articleid/25/

Finally...

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse,
rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse,
rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, do you get the idea?
