"California by Rail" trip checklist
April 29-May 4

Dear Parents of Ninth Graders and Ninth Graders:

We want to give you some specifics about our upcoming California by Rail class trip. As you know, we depart next Sunday, April 29.

The departure is an early one. We encourage you to make carpool arrangements this week to minimize the number of families needing to trek to the train stations.

In regard to questions about what to bring, we have compiled the following advice:

Pack lightly in easy-to-carry bags, or a bag on wheels. We must carry our own bags a number of blocks, a number of times. There is no need for anything dressier than school clothes, neither is there need for anything less dressy.

We are representing our school; so please wear nice jeans; khakis; shirts without logos or spaghetti straps; close-toed, comfortable walking shoes; and be prepared for Bay Area weather with layers for warmth, maybe a vest and a waterproof shell, or something equivalent. There is no need for a different outfit each day; you may "recycle".

In addition to the clothes detailed above, please bring the following:

  • Fill-the-well book, pen, colored pencils if you wish
  • Book(s) and or magazine(s) to read
  • Student identification with name and picture
  • Watch
  • Day pack for all-day excursions away from the hotel
  • Personal medications including your own choice of pain reliever
  • Spending money for 2+ breakfasts, 6 lunches, and 3 dinners
  • Our hotels are located near coffee shops, delis, and small groceries, so students may easily purchase inexpensive breakfasts and snacks; the inn in Oakland offers a complimentary continental breakfast.
  • We will always be located near choices for lunch; students may want to bring a sack breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Sunday on the train, or they may purchase food from the snack bar or dining car on the train.
  • We will eat two group dinners together that are paid for already.

You may bring the following if you wish:

  • Bathing suit (pools at both hotels)
  • Activities for the train: CD player with earphones (no speakers), cards, Game Boys, etc.
  • Travel alarm clock
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat (strongly encouraged!)
  • Light, inexpensive camera
