Methods to attain the goal:
"Words have no legs, and
yet they walk." - Mali
Proverb
Theme of the culminating project/performance:
Examine how disability affects our lives and the lives of others, and express our views through the arts.
A disability is defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual. (An impairment is a physiological disorder affecting one or more of a number of body systems, or a mental or psychological disorder.) The disability may be visible (e.g., a character who is blind or uses a wheelchair) or hidden (e.g., a character with a learning or emotional disability). For more information on disabilities: http://www.vsarts.org/x244.xml
Select three concepts and use the Synectics process to develop a "piece" for yourself and the culminating group project. Should you have a disability topic you feel strongly about, exchange one of the words you selected with your personal topic. Share how you feel. Show us your perspective. Express your voice. We encourage you to work with others or alone. If you choose to work with others (highly recommended), select people based on their skills, attitudes, knowledge, work ethic, and passions. Open yourself up to different media, don't feel afraid to mix the media. The creative process will help you along. In the end, good decisions at each juncture lead to good solutions.

Historical and Cultural Context - context.htm - This site provides an overview of art movements and the context in which they developed. We have not covered every movement or period, rather selected snippets to help provide students with an opportunity to explore the elements that have influenced other artists in their quest for expressing personal voice. Jean-Michel Basquiat - http://www.artchive.com/artchive/B/basquiat.html - Jean Michel Basquiat has been one of my favored artist for years. I own his biography book with several of his works inside of it, although he has done more work on functional objects, such as tires, doors, and city walls. Basquiat was well known in the 80's decade when he was friends with Andy Warhol and other famous artists. Basquiat was part of a large movement that changed art forever. I hope people will be interested to see his work, it is amazing in every respect. He paints right from his soul. - Melissa Powell
